What Is Ads.txt, and Why Does It Matter?
Ads.txt stands for “Authorized Digital Sellers,” and it’s a simple text file that ensures only authorized parties can sell ads on your website. Adding this file to your site is critical because:
It ensures transparency and security in digital ad transactions.
It prevents ad fraud, ensuring advertisers trust your platform.
Without it, your Google AdSense account may display a warning or stop showing ads altogether.
What You’ll Need Before You Start
Before diving in, here’s what you’ll need:
A Google AdSense account (sign up if you don’t already have one).
Access to your Squarespace account.
Your ads.txt file (provided by Google AdSense).

This can be done by opening the notepad on your computer and pasting the code there.

In the Main Navigation section, click the + sign.
3. Click the Link tab and switch the selection to File.
4. Click the Upload Icon and select the ads.txt file from your saved files
5. After the file has been uploaded, click close, no need to click save because we’re only using it for uploading the file.
This will store the file in your Squarespace CDN and it will be accessible at /s/ads.txt, eg: your-domain.com/s/ads.txt
Step 4: Trace the File URL
Use this URL tracing tool Beyondspace Redirection tracer to get the real URL of the file.
Paste your your-domain.com/s/ads.txt URL into the tool and trace it to its CDN source URL.
Step 5: Set Up a Redirect in URL Mappings
Go to Settings > Developer Tools > URL Mappings in your Squarespace dashboard.
Add the following redirect:
/ads.txt -> {real-file-path} 301
Replace {real-file-path} with the traced CDN URL from Beyondspace Redirection Tool and click Save.
After you have followed each step above, you should now go back to your Google Adsense account and recrawl your site. My Ads.txt file was found immediately, but depending on your site, it can take a few days.
